ALLY Shoes: Can you share a bit about how you came to where you are today, both personally and professionally?

Kendra: I grew up watching my mom work as a journalist, so from an early age, I knew storytelling was something I wanted to pursue. As a lifelong athlete, both growing up and in college, sports broadcasting felt like a natural intersection of my passions. Being a woman in sports has taught me that excellence isn’t optional — you have to be prepared, disciplined, and willing to outwork the room. I embraced that challenge. My competitive nature has pushed me to continuously sharpen my craft, and that mindset has played a huge role in getting me to where I am today.

ALLY Shoes: What first drew you to sports journalism, and what keeps you passionate about the field?

Kendra: My initial draw to journalism came from my mom, but my time as a student-athlete at UNC–Chapel Hill truly solidified my path. I was surrounded by elite athletics and one of the top journalism programs in the country, which gave me incredible access and opportunity. What keeps me passionate is the constant pursuit of growth. I treat this career like a race — you can’t stay stagnant. You have to keep learning, improving, and finding ways to be sharper, stronger, and more prepared every single day.

ALLY Shoes: Women — and particularly women of color — are still underrepresented in sports media. What strategies or personal approaches have helped you stand out and succeed in the industry?

Kendra: I always encourage young women of color to truly study their sport and not limit themselves to mastering just one. Knowledge is power in this industry. The more you understand — across teams, leagues, and sports — the more versatile and valuable you become. Being prepared and adaptable has allowed me to stand out, build trust, and grow opportunities throughout my career.

ALLY Shoes: What’s one of the most memorable events or interviews you’ve covered so far, and why does it stand out to you?

Kendra: One of the most memorable moments of my career was interviewing NBA Commissioner Adam Silver in Mexico City. I was there to cover a basketball game, and it was an opportunity I never imagined I’d have during my first year covering the NBA. I still remember the nerves walking into that interview and how intentional I was with every question. It stands out because it reminded me that preparation opens doors you don’t always see coming.

ALLY Shoes: As we reflect on Black History Month, how do you see the influence of Black history and culture shaping the world of sports and sports journalism?

Kendra: The influence of Black history and culture is present every single day in sports. It shapes how we connect with players, how stories are told, and how interviews are approached with authenticity and understanding. Nowhere is that more evident than in the NBA, where Black culture has helped define the league’s identity and storytelling. Seeing how that influence continues to evolve within sports journalism is powerful — and honestly, beautiful to witness.

ALLY Shoes: Who is your ally?

Kendra: My allies are my parents and family, along with the women in sports journalism who consistently support, encourage, and challenge me. Also, the people who have helped to shape me over the years – instructors, friends and mentors – who have never stopped cheering for me. They are the people I lean on when I need perspective, motivation, or an extra push to keep going. Having that circle of support has been essential in navigating and thriving in this industry.
