As a woman, your personal image is an important part of who you are. In most cases, it impacts how you feel about yourself, how others perceive you, and even your life opportunities. Taking charge of your personal image and wardrobe style can help you feel more confident and put together and can ultimately improve your overall quality of life.

When considering the emotional impact of dressing, well, this adage that we all know and love sums it up: “When you look good, you feel good.” It’s a simple concept, but one that is too often overlooked. When you feel confident in your appearance, your self-esteem naturally soars and makes you feel more capable and in control. On the other hand, if you don’t feel good about the way you look, it can have the opposite effect…I know you know this – we’ve ALL been there! (More on this later!)

So exactly how do you go about wrapping your arms around this nebulous, often frustrating notion of revamping your personal image and wardrobe style? Here are some tips for how you can confidently take control of this critical area in your life:

1. Know your body type and dress accordingly: This first step is SUPER important! You must understand (and embrace!) your body type as it is now and what styles flatter your figure. Understanding your body type will help you select clothing that fits well, enhances your natural shape, and most of all serves YOU.

2. Invest in timeless pieces: While it can be tempting to follow fashion trends, it’s important to have a foundation of timeless pieces in your wardrobe. These are items that never go out of style and can be mixed and matched with a variety of other pieces. Some examples of timeless pieces include a little black dress, a well-fitted blazer, comfortable dark wash jeans, and a pair of classic pumps like ALLY Shoes.

3. Experiment with different styles: In addition to building a foundation of timeless pieces, it’s also important to have some fun with your wardrobe and experiment with different styles. This can help you find what works best for you and what makes you feel most confident. Don’t be afraid to try something new and step outside of your comfort zone. An easy way to do this is to identify ONE item (a garment, a pair of shoes, or an accessory) and build your look around that particular item. It can be really fun to do and it’s a very quick way to achieve this goal. Bonus points for selecting an item that you haven’t worn in a while!

4. Accessorize: Accessories are a great way to take your outfit to the next level and add some personality. Whether it’s a statement necklace, a bold pair of earrings, or a scarf, accessories can help you express your personal style and add some flair to your look.

5. Invest in quality pieces: While it can be tempting to go for the cheapest option (please don’t!), investing in quality pieces will certainly save your precious coins in the long run. With proper care, quality pieces are more likely to last longer and hold up better, meaning you won’t have to replace them as often.

6. Discover your signature look: Having a signature look can help you feel more confident and put together and can also make getting dressed every day that much easier. Your signature look can be something as simple as always wearing a certain type of shoe or reading glasses or even always having a bold lip! Have fun with it but make sure your look truly represents who you are today.

7. Don’t be afraid to seek out help: If you’re feeling overwhelmed (or frankly, underwhelmed) or are just unsure of where to start when it comes to your personal image and wardrobe style, don’t be afraid to seek out help. A Personal Stylist can help you unlock your style by providing valuable options and advice while helping you build a wardrobe that works for YOU.

Here's some additional food for thought around the emotional impact your clothes have on you…

  • One of the simplest, yet powerful thing to remember about clothing is that it’s a tool…a tool that we can leverage to transform the way we feel. When you wear an outfit that makes you feel confident and stylish, it can change your entire demeanor. You may walk a little taller, make eye contact more easily, and exude an air of self-assurance. Let’s face it…it’s especially important for women, who are often judged more harshly on their appearance and are expected to conform to certain beauty standards.
  • But this whole concept of reigniting your personal style isn’t just about looking good for others, either. Dressing well can also be a form of self-care. When you make a concerted effort to look and feel your best, it can be a small but meaningful act of self-love. It’s a way of saying to yourself, “I matter, and I deserve to feel good about myself.”
  • Of course, it’s important to remember that fashion is just one aspect of your personal image, and it’s not the most important thing. It’s not about trying to conform to some arbitrary standard of beauty or perfection. It’s about finding what works for you and what makes you feel good about yourself. It’s about expressing your personality and being true to who you are.
  • In summary, if you want to take charge of your personal image and wardrobe style, start by focusing on what makes you feel good. Nail your body type. Be more discerning about what you introduce to your wardrobe. Experiment with different styles and try new things. Don’t be afraid to seek out help if you need it. And most importantly, remember that the most important thing is not what you wear, but how you feel in it. When you feel good about yourself, it shows in everything you do.
