Lunar New Year 2026 commences on Tuesday, February 17th. This year is the year of the Fire Horse. But what does that mean for you? Read on to find out more about Lunar New Year, the year of the Fire Horse, and how you can step into this new year feeling empowered and confident!

A Brief History of Lunar New Year

Lunar New Year is a cultural holiday originating in China, but is now celebrated by communities all over the world. The holiday marks a 15-day festival that follows the first new moon of the lunar (lunisolar) calendar year, and celebrates the beginning of spring. Festivities are spread over the 15-day period, starting with the new moon, and ending with the lantern festival. Families and communities come together to celebrate the occasion each year to welcome good fortune and prosperity. Red is used in the celebration to symbolize good fortune, joy, and prosperity, while fighting off and protecting against evil spirits. In Chinese folklore, the Nian Beast is a monster that emerges at Lunar New Year to destroy villages, livestock, and crops. As the tale goes, the color red is a weakness of this beast, along with bright lights and loud noises. To ward off this beast and symbolize the holiday’s roots in this piece of folklore, celebrations use the color red, lanterns, and firecrackers, to protect and bring good fortune in the new year.

What is the Year Of The Fire Horse?

Another aspect of the Lunar New Year is the zodiac animal. There are 12 traditional animals that repeat on a 12 year cycle. The animals are as follows: rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig. Alongside the animals, there is a 5 year element cycle. The elements are as follows: wood, fire, earth, metal, and water. The zodiac animal influences one’s personality, fortune, career, and relationships in that lunar year. Each element has set traits. Wood brings growth and creativity, fire brings passion and energy, earth brings stability and practicality, metal brings strength and determination, and water brings adaptability and wisdom.

2026 is the year of the Fire Horse. This combination only happens every 60 years, with the last one being in 1966.

The horse represents strength, freedom, independence, energy, and forward momentum. The fire element represents passion and energy. In a recent interview with Vogue Magazine, Ada Ooi, an award-winning integrative Chinese medicine clinician and founder of 001 London Skincare, states that, “Fire brings intensity, urgency, and passion, which can feel motivating but also demanding. This combination often creates a faster pace of life and a stronger drive to achieve, making it especially important to stay attuned to the body’s limits and energy reserves.” This will be a year of intense, passion-driven, fast-paced change, so it’s all about what you chose to do with that energy!

What does this mean for me?

The Fire Horse embraces spontaneity, so take action now, and adjust as you go. In order to really embrace this energy though, you must find your rhythm within spontaneity. The year of the horse is about motion, but not who can get the most momentum at once. Pace yourself, it’s not about running the fastest, but rather running the longest to sustain your future self.

Lastly, it is important to listen to your body and take breaks when you need them. You must prioritize recovery to embrace long-term energy, change, confidence, and success.

Year of the Fire Horse Do’s and Don’t’s

Dos:

This lunar year (2/17/26-2/5/27) do the following:

  • Be intentional in your direction
  • Make your goals a reality
  • Take needed time to rest to avoid burnout
  • Pause and think before having big reactions
  • Set boundaries for your time and energy

Don’t:

  • Overwork yourself
  • Ignore boundaries and fatigue
  • Say “yes” to everything (evaluate how it fits into your goals and intentions first!)
  • Confuse being busy with being productive
