Trend Report: Mary Janes

Spring is in full swing, and summer is on the horizon. While we have been enjoying warmer weather, more hours of sunlight, and watching nature liven up after a cold winter, a new footwear trend has been emerging – Mary Janes!

The Mary Jane silhouette is defined by a single strap fastened down with a buckle across the instep of the shoe. The name “Mary Jane” was popularized by the 1902 comic series Buster Brown, where a character of the name “Mary Jane” wore this style of shoe. Prior to this, the shoes were referred to as “bar shoes”, in reference to the “bar” that runs across them. In the early 20th century, the shoes were first popularized as part of school uniforms for young girls due to the comfort and practicality they offered. By the 1960’s Mary Jane’s were a staple footwear piece in every woman’s closet. The shoe became a mod-style staple, and was seen on celebrities at the time such as Twiggy (left), Audrey Hepburn, and Jane Birkin (right).

Through the 1990’s and early 2000’s, Mary Janes were made popular once again. This time around, chunky platform styles were the hot topic, being seen most within alternative and punk fashion movements.

Most recently, Mary Janes have begun to trend again in the 2020’s. The current iteration of the Mary Jane trend prioritizes sleek design, refined minimalist style, and comfort-first luxury materials. Miu Miu, Alaia, and The Row (left to right) were some of the first brands to bring Mary Janes into the current fashion zeitgeist through runways, red carpets, and celebrity closets. For the near future, it seems like the style is here to stay in the forefront of the fashion industry, though it will always remain a timeless, comfortable, and versatile style.
