What to Wear as Mother of the Bride or Groom

We are thrilled to be highlighting tips and style suggestions for all of the mother's of brides and grooms out there. As summer wedding season is in full effect and fall weddings are around the corner, we wanted to highlight some tips to be mindful of and consider. Plus don't miss the fabulous shoe offerings we have for the moms out there celebrating their son or daughter's special day.

From a recent mother of the bride herself, Kay Harms and who is on the lovely cover image. Kay Harms and her beautiful daughter at her daughter's wedding. Kay has some fabulous tips having just been a mother of the bride. "A block heel is great for a wedding in the event that you take any photos on the grass or gravel outside. And silver looks beautiful with lavender."

"I'd suggest the mother of the bride also have a backup dress just in case a zipper breaks or something tears. It can be a borrowed dress or one worn to a previous wedding. It's just in case! And I suggest doing a complete run-through of getting dressed for the day and then pack everything in one tote bag for the big day. So put on the undergarments, dress, jewelry, hair accessories, shoes, everything, and then pack it all together so it's ready for the big day."

Our favorite tips. "Don't forget a pretty handkerchief! And have a friend carry your cell phone to take photos of you as you spend time with family and mingle with guests."

Kay's style suggestion

We tapped into a stylist that recently styled the mother of a groom, Rachel Jimenez Penca, Founder of Rachel J Styling. She opted for navy and silver. See her top 3 tips below:

Styling Tip 1:

Communication is key when selecting your attire. Speak to the bride as far in advance of the wedding as possible to understand their vision and any preferred colors for the bridal party. For this particular wedding, the bridesmaids will be wearing black dresses, so we opted for a contrasting shade, steel blue, to help her stand out elegantly without blending in. This ensures harmony with the wedding aesthetic while allowing you to shine on your own.

Styling Tip 2:

Next to the dress, choosing the right shoes for the wedding day is the most important decision. It's not just about style—it's about comfort and ease throughout the whole day. Don't forget, these shoes will need to take you from the ceremony to the dance floor! For the Moms, I suggest a 2 or 3 inch heel. The classic pump or block heel from Ally Shoes is perfect. As for color? Opt for a metallic or shimmer fabric in silver or rose gold.

Styling Tip 3:

Don't make your accessories and jewelry an afterthought! They not only add flair and personality, but serve many practical purposes. Consider a chic clutch that compliments your outfit and is large enough to hold your essentials for the day, such as your phone, lip gloss, tissues, and mints. For this look, we suggest adding a bold statement earring since you won't need a necklace for an asymmetrical dress neckline. Also, add a distinct bangle or bracelet to the wrist on the open shoulder side to complete your look.

Rachel's Style Suggestion:

Our final tip and style advice comes from one of the stylists that we work closely with at Ally Shoes, Lora LaPratt founder of Shopping Girl XOXO.

"My biggest pieces of advice for MOB/MOG clients is to NOT dress like a MOB/MOG. Keeping it classic, elegant, chic, and cohesive with the wedding theme is always a safe bet. You don't need to put yourself into a typical MOB/MOG style just because that is your title. Make sure you look and most importantly feel comfortable and confident for the big day so that you can focus on the celebrations."

"As for shoe style a slingback kitten heel or lower block heel from Ally Shoes would be great for all day comfort and elegance."

We loved having this conversation as so many of our customers are looking for heels for a special event. It's fun to get different perspectives on things to keep in mind if you are the mother of a bride or groom. It also looks like silver is a huge winner, go team silver!
