An Earth Month Post: Guest blog post written by Emily Watts, Founder of Coblr.
This Earth Month, we are looking at the simple habits that can keep your favorite leather goods in rotation for years.
At Coblr, we’ve processed thousands of women’s shoe repairs — heels, flats, boots, you name it. And after looking at the data, one thing became really clear: the most common repairs we see are a tale of maintenance and then what happens if you don’t put a little regular care into your shoes.
That’s not a knock on anyone. Life is busy, and shoe maintenance isn’t exactly top of mind when you’re running between meetings and living that life! But when we looked at what actually brings shoes into the shop, the patterns were hard to ignore and the fixes are simpler than you’d think.
What the Data Tells Us
Across thousands of repair records for women’s shoes, heels, flats, and boots, these are the top five services we see over and over again:
1. Heel tip replacements
2. Protective soles
3. New heels
4. Regluing
5. Leather cleaning and conditioning (scuffs, dryness, discoloration)
What stood out to us is that most of these aren’t catastrophic damage — they’re the result of normal wear that builds up over time. And with some simple habits, you can dramatically extend the life of your shoes and push these repairs much further down the road.
5 Care Tips That Actually Make a Difference
1. Replace your heel tips before they wear down to the metal
This is the number one repair we see, and it’s also the easiest to prevent. Heel tips are the small rubber or plastic caps at the bottom of your heels. Once they wear through, you start walking on the metal pin — which damages the heel itself and makes the repair more involved (and more expensive). Check them regularly and replace them as soon as they start to thin out. Think of it like replacing brake pads before they grind the rotor.
2. Add protective soles right away
Our second most common service is adding protective soles, and here’s the thing — this one is best done before you even wear the shoes. A thin rubber sole applied to the bottom of a new pair protects the original leather sole from water, pavement, and everyday wear. It’s a small upfront investment that can save you from a full resole, which is quite costly. And protective soles come is lots of different colors if you want to add a little party to your soles.
3. Avoid moisture and storing shoes in hot places
Moisture and warm/dry climates make glues lose their efficacy, which often results in soles starting to separate or peel. If this start happening, get it reglued sooner rather than later. The longer you wait, the more dirt and moisture gets between the layers, making the bond harder to restore and damaging the upper. A quick reglue when the issue first appears is simple and affordable. Waiting until the sole is flapping? That’s a bigger job.
4. Condition your leather regularly
Leather is skin — it dries out. Scuffs, cracks, and discoloration are some of the most common issues we see, and they’re often the result of leather that hasn’t been moisturized or weatherproofed. A good leather conditioner applied every few weeks (or monthly, depending on how often you wear them) keeps the material supple and resistant to damage. Wipe shoes down after wearing them, and treat stains and scuffs early before they set in. Here are some of our favorite cleaning and conditioning products:
For Suede:
- A suede brush helps refresh the suede after cleaning. Here are a few options.
- To remove stains, we recommend this suede eraser.
- After cleaning and the suede is dry, we recommend a waterproofing spray.
Regular Leather:
- A horsehair brush: to remove dirt
- Leather shoe conditioner: Saphir is the gold standard and will help clean and hydrate leather, which prevents cracks. We are total fans of Saphir Renovateur and Meltonion.
- And finally, finish with Protector spray: as with the suede, we recommended this waterproofing spray
5. Rotate your shoes and store them properly
This one doesn’t map to a single repair, but it prevents almost all of them. Wearing the same pair every day accelerates wear on heels, soles, and leather. Rotating between a few pairs gives each one time to rest and dry out. When you’re not wearing them, store them in a cool, dry place — ideally with shoe trees and in a shoe bag to help maintain their shape and absorb moisture.
Repair Is Part of the Journey
At Coblr, we believe that repair isn’t a last resort it’s part of the journey of owning something you love. Your favorite pair of heels, the boots you’ve broken in perfectly, the flats you reach for every week — they deserve more than to be tossed when they show some wear.
We’re building Coblr to make the repair experience as easy as buying something new, so that caring for your favorite items isn’t a chore — it’s just what you do. With a little maintenance, those shoes you love can stay in your rotation for years to come.
This Earth Month, the most sustainable thing you can do might already be in your closet. Take care of it. Coblr is the repair platform making it easy to extend the life of the things you love.
Reduce. Rewear. Repair.
